Focus : Camille Pissarro

L’Omnibus, Statue d’Henri IV et Hôtel de la Monnaie, Soleil du matin, 1903.
Feb 25, 2026

The centerpiece of our exhibition IMPRESSIONISM & HERITAGE, on view through March 21, this painting showcases Pissarro’s two masterful techniques: the omnibus captures modern Paris in a series of bold, vivid strokes, with a touch of red that seems to reflect the city’s pulse; the branches, drawn like calligraphy in the morning mist, let light and air do their work.

One is all movement, the other is pure atmosphere, and together, they make the scene feel immediate.

After years devoted intensely to rural subjects, Pissarro embraces Paris with renewed motivation, making the city his studio and his muse. From an intimate, elevated vantage point, he composes the scene like a conductor: the atmosphere sets the tone, movement carries the rhythm, and light binds it all together. Here, the everyday becomes extraordinary, a morning in Paris painted as a pure sensation.

The “Omnibus” Effect: Modern Life, Captured in Real Time

Pissarro achieves this in two strokes: the omnibus condenses modern Paris into a succession of thick, lively lines, with a touch of red that seems to reflect the city’s pulse; the branches, drawn like calligraphy in the morning mist, let the light and air do their work.

One is all movement, the other is pure atmosphere, and together, they give the entire scene an immediate quality.

As the centerpiece of the IMPRESSIONISM & HERITAGE exhibition, it captures everything the exhibition celebrates: heritage, innovation, and the poetry of everyday life.

IMPRESSIONISM & HERITAGE remains open to the public through March 21.
